didn't like it

i liked japon when i saw it (before i saw taste of cherry) so i went to this without knowing anything about it other than it was reygadas.  immediately with the first shot it was very clear his intentions were more focused this time:  super-clean cinematography and setting so he seems more willing to use […]

the ‘intense crime/serial murderer’ genre seems popular with devil’s rejects, saw, chaos (so much press and it still isn’t even out on dvd) and the remakes of texas chainsaw and hills have eyes. so last year i watched what i thought were the origins or seminal films of the genre: henry, last house […]

this seemed to want to tread the line between wild raucous satire and wondering ‘how do these guys sleep at night’. i guess it did it alright. it ends up trying to have a happy middle ground ending for aaron eckhart’s character, which was kind of bland to me. there’s darkness to […]

this one’s been sitting around for a couple weeks and had some negative netflix-atrophy going. finally got around to it and was pleased it was entertaining. animals acting are good for me. the part where the cat turns the tv on and ‘ben’ plays was eye-roll inducing. if you want to reference […]

this was a lot like shape of things, with a real restricted space and the same basic story.  i found it more interesting maybe cause guy-space vs. public-space is a lot more real to me than the manipulations of shape of things.  it was again very calculated, and it could really be helped by letting […]

this had an interesting concept of the power of narrative swaying betty and morgan freeman’s character, but it never really was fully realized to anything.  it ended up just being about the ride, which is fine but after just seeing shape of things and company of men i expect labute to give me something to […]

**ooo

well i saw this but i didn’t have much reaction to it.  it has a pop song score which always annoys me.  especially at the end when they’re partying to…public enemy?!?  sure.  actually, i think that c&c music factory song was a good choice.  they should have gone farther with an all dated-didn’t-age-well soundtrack.
i […]

i like this as a model for a biopic, mostly cause the pacing and the narrative ellipses kept things moving along.  when i would get really sick of doolittle they’d move on to a scene where he did something decent, so you got a taste without getting totally mired in it.  tommy lee jones did […]

face the goddamn wall

i liked this, mostly just the beginning. it built the character pretty nimbly, except for the too obvious ‘can’t find a friend build one’ line. it also had some really funny touches. there was a woman in the vet’s office drinking a 7up awkwardly that cracked me up.
when may’s change happens […]
