Thank You for Smoking (2005)

this seemed to want to tread the line between wild raucous satire and wondering ‘how do these guys sleep at night’. i guess it did it alright. it ends up trying to have a happy middle ground ending for aaron eckhart’s character, which was kind of bland to me. there’s darkness to a character like that and if you want to look at it you can’t be glib. a wild over the top ending might have been more pleasing for me. but along the way i did laugh more than i expected, especially at the shot of the apple pie.
so far the major roles i’ve seen of eckhart’s have been this, in the company of men, and the core. in all of them he’s got an absurd ethos: company of men - super evil; the core - super good; and this - super ambivalent. apparently he must not be human.

So would you say this was pretty good, but with potential to be better?

i’d say it was about what you’d expect from the previews but with a little more sentimentality.
i’m always reluctant to say good or bad since i know my tastes are pretty divergent from any reference point. to me it’s more about - what are your expectations and to what degree are they met?
i’m also trying to be a little more careful since you came so close to renting dogville. that was an averted disaster!
