The Magnificent Ambersons (1942)

overall, by the time the movie is done i found the story decently satisfying. basically a nice little story about how people’s lives get ruined with mostly understated pathos. but along the way the scenes did not interest me at all. partly i think it’s pretty dated - the idea of a big family name really means nothing to me, and the significance of this and that was lost. i felt detatched most of the time. and the other part was that it’s from a book and tried to touch on a lot of stuff the book did(i imagine, never read it,) but can’t really go into any depth so it just ends up being cliff’s notes. fanny, especially, typifies this. she’s so traumatized and broken down in every scene, and that’s all we see of her.
i also never like it when a movie’s set in the past and the characters have commentary on upcoming events that’s ironical for us. george’s ranting about horseless carriages, so he’s obviously an idiot.
