i’m totally gnarly

i dislike relationship movies, especially relationship comma the slow death of. but this was very watchable and comes across as a very urgent cultural document. by the time i got to the end everything seemed almost mythic. it was a little abrupt time-wise (i think the final running time is just over an hour and a half,) but the final 10 minutes felt inevitable. there was so little non-diagetic music and each cut from a scene felt important. the final ‘need the eggs’ joke reminded me of the teeth metaphor in secret lives of dentists.

he definitely wanted an eclectic style with the subtitles and 4th wall and animation, and even for an mtv-jaded sensibility it felt like enough. well, maybe without the animation. i appreciated the beyond the valley of the dolls-style party lines, but none of them made me laugh.

one complaint - the bumper cars inserts in la were really clumsy. plus by that time the movie wasn’t so much about his life as a whole, just that relationship.
