i started out watching this and expecting to compare it unfavorably to i spit on your grave, but this is way different and actually not too bad. the decision to make her a mute was a major mistake, they were too aggressive in trying to point out phallic power, and some of the actors and dialogue were awful. but i liked the way things developed and resolved. kind of a hyper-monster type arc where she just looks for any excuse. the first couple scenes after the rapes were really effective in showing how her fear was growing and every man seemed menacing. i also liked the jarring unconventional score.
also reminded me of death wish. that one i kept thinking ‘how many times can this guy get mugged?’
joins willard and may in using a dog as the barometer of whether or not we should sympathize with the main character. i about fell over in how they did this one. it’s funny how dogs are always that gauge though. seems a little screwball to care about little yapper phil after i lost track of her human bodycount.
