this did well balancing un/likeable characters on both sides. and i liked how they made jim a bit of a brat right out the gate. the woman slapping him was a great moment. then when he’s in the camp he gets to be a little too incredible.
i thought it was overscored, especially in the evacuation scene when he gets separated from his family. it could have been really intense if they’d ratcheted it back a bit.
i don’t like long movies but the length here seemed justified. especially in the camp where it needed that time to flow rather than just being ‘here’s this person’s story, here’s this person’s story.’
