Gang Tapes (2001)

this was a good idea and well executed i thought. the ‘real’ presentation really exposes the glorifying and exploitive aspects of gang movies. the ‘gang’ is basically some hotheads that sit around an apartment or in a car and decide to do something stupid. if that’s cool to a viewer, it’s glorification, if not, it’s stupid. but it is baldly exploitive in reinforcing this division.
the device of having a camera a part of the scene works well with the actors - so much of the action is posturing for the diegetic camera so the actors have free rein to let loose. there was a nice mix of non-sequitar stories that were hard to follow, and along those lines it would have been nice to have more characters come and go.
i think my favorite part was the house parties. it’s just nice to see a party depicted that’s just a bunch of people having fun/hanging out without looking like a music video.
