i’m totally gnarly

i was surprised there was a pretty sizable audience to see this - the past few movies i’ve seen at this theater have averaged about 5 people.  but it was a lot of middle-aged couples and i guess the movie does appeal to that audience.  thankfully there were only 2 instances of smug, knowing chuckles - one at the ’sounds like marriage’ line and more annoyingly at the ‘all those awful american movies’ line.

i was very impressed at the movie itself.  the time-shifting made sense, and i really like the dominance of the ‘natural light’ hallway as its main visual motif - it’s not such a showy visual as say the skunkweed so its repetition wasn’t too much.  i liked dropping in on the character’s monologues.  the only transition to one that felt a little clunky was marian making grant pull over then launching in.

i didn’t like the effect they used for the flashbacks.  it just looked like some added grain and i think it would have been worth it to shoot it on super8 and transfer it a couple times to make it authentic.  and leave out the shot of the college girls or do that without any effects - it felt out of place.
