i wasn’t expecting much from this, and it was fine fun, but disappointing for its photography and soundtrack. i read afterwards that there were issues with the soundtrack and it had to be replaced, but even still they could do better than what they ended up picking.
the frivilous tone of the whole thing was fine, but it made the ’stick it to the squares’ parts even stupider. nixon-bashing is pretty tedious for me and this is pretty much where they hung their hat. i wonder if people are going to cling to dubya-bashing this long too.
murray’s inability to really disapper in the role is kind of an asset in a way. depp more embodied i think what hst wanted in raoul duke - some guy with a whirlwind of artifacts and paraphernalia following him around like pigpen - but murray’s is probably closer to what he was like in real life - some guy lugging a ice bucket around with him.
