i’m totally gnarly

i like that they tried something different with the main character here, but it did get a little tiring watching an idiot the whole time. maybe just that other characters were oblivious to it. they had plenty of winks and some of those were my favorite parts - jack spouting on the cb with the sandwich, his numerous meaningless proclamations, and especially the knife victim he gets stuck under - so i think at some point i wanted a character to point out his stupidity. also i think it compares unfavorably to escape from new york because there wasn’t as clear a setup and drive through the story, so i got tired of jack’s ‘anyone want to tell me what the hell’s going on here?’ every few minutes.

i like how they did the multi-character fights - going less for cool fighting and more for funny or interesting visuals and rhythms.

i had a little trouble getting over the racial aspects of it. it’s a cool experience of diving into this bizarre and endless mythology, but they just called it ‘chinese’ the whole time and it would have made more sense to make it regional or secret societal.
