i’m totally gnarly

so a lot has been made about how anti-commercial it was to make a movie about rats and with an unpronounceable title.  i think this put my expectations too high, so when this trod familiar ground i got too especially annoyed.  the conflict with his dad felt very perfunctory, then when it turned into a big issue at the end i couldn’t really stick with it.  also typical of a lot of animated features they kept shoehorning in pointless action-type sequences.  the one where he gets separated in the sewers was a little different cause they emphasized the scary violence of it rather than just making it some crazy roller coaster.  but all the running around the kitchen or away from shotguns were strictly ‘distract the kids’ stuff.  anyways, my point about all that is - if you want to be different do so in some meaningful way, not just in the title.

there were some pretty gratuitous left-field slaps at critics in the big voiceover at the end, but overall i liked the theme of passion vs. critique.  i also liked the score - it was eclectic and cutesy without going overboard.
