for some reason i avoided this for a while and thought it might be annoying but it was one of the nicer and more fulfilling experiences in recent memory. hotel chevalier i didn’t like much at all - mostly just cause of the mean male tone. darjeeling also starts with kind of a mean tone in making fun of these straw dog idiots, but is just so funny i really enjoyed it. the whole crazy scene with the pepper spray was great, then brendan gives him the voltage converter and i lost it. also all the leads and brody especially are very gentle as these jerks. then it changes and i found the ‘even douchebags deserve profundity’ tone very warm and sweet and genuine. and it carried me the whole rest of the way.
overall i think this genuineness and earnestness is what made me appreciate it the most. the whole soundtrack i would normally find annoying - cool mixtape type songs and vaguely exotic songs for an exotic locale - but it seems like he’s genuinely excited about all of it. the same with all the slo-mo’s and fast pans - they don’t do much for me, but they’re done with joy that’s infectious.
